Two free public events were presented in conjunction with the opera's opening performances.   Jorge Volpi and Susan Narucki joined the following regional experts for a discussion of human trafficking in the San Diego - Tijuana border region:

Elizabeth Aguilera, Journalist San Diego Union Tribune

Elizabeth Aguilera covers the issue of immigration and changing demographics in the San Diego region. She also contributes to business coverage of the economy. Aguilera joined the U-T in late 2010. Previously a writer for the Denver Post, she covered urban affairs, including the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and later joined the business team and helped chronicle the impacts of the Great Recession. She has also written for the Orange County Register and the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

With so many academic institutions now developing global health units and areas of focus or even adding new curricula and degrees on the topic, the field is likely to grow further. Each group is attempting to be part of this movement and positioning itself to tackle an area from the wide range of issues related to global health.
